Lego, Lego everywhere!

I don't know if my words will do justice to the craziness but also the fun that was Dylan's birthday party. Let me start out by saying I had originally told Dylan no party this year. He's had a pretty big party every year so far. I am a little bit insane and so I did things like throw a bowling party for a 2 year old (Dylan, not Caitlin.) So I thought with all of the fuss over his baptism this year (not pictured but hopefully I will be able to back track to that soon) and all the family we had in town for Thanksgiving/Dylan's baptism we could forego the expensive and/or time consuming party for him this year. I was so, so wrong. He didn't follow my logic and I was persuaded to do something for birthday #8. But by this time I was too late to book any place cost effective and all the dates near his actual birthday were filled with the parties of the 30 thousand other kids in his class with fall birthdays as well. So we decided to throw a home birthday party, but rent a room at the community center so that there was enough space for all the boys from his class + a few non class friends. Lego was the theme and I put Ken in charge of decorations while I looked in to games. He made awesome giant Lego for the room:

I tried to make a home made cake that was going to look like Lego bricks (you've probably seen it done successfully- you use marshmallows for the little bumps on top). I was not successful! I got started with the assembling, got frustrated, threw the cake in the garbage, called Ken and told him to order a cake from Costco. He then had the brilliant idea to have Lego minifigures spelling out Dylan's name on the cake:
I love the cake! He's brilliant. This is why I married him! So Ken took care of the cake and the decor, and I spent hours stealing other people's creativity off the internet. I found a website with tons of Lego party ideas. The kids were divided into teams and had five minutes to build something- a car or house or tower. At the end of five minutes I took photos of their creations and they were given five more minutes to build something else. repeat until the kids start throwing Lego around the room.
Then we cleaned up the room and had a few relay races- carry the Lego on the spoon, build a tower out of Lego while wearing gloves.... Then they ate cake and went home.

It was a fun party but I have learned my lesson. I want to pay other people to run the party for me! Or maybe next year we'll let him take one friend to a movie. I like that idea even better!

All's well that end's well.... or is that simply a myth???

Looked fun, and even though lots of work, I'm sure you had one happy boy at the end of the evening (tell me I'm right on that, at least ;)
so fun! so creative! my kids would want to be your kids if they saw these :) my big all out is "letting" them have friends over to SHARE their birthday with their family!

10 years today

Dylan made me these hearts as an anniversary gift. Sweet, huh? Ten years ago I was newly graduated from college, in love and ready to get married! Well, technically I was freaking out about getting married, which probably made Ken feel super good. Most of you know this story and the rest of you probably don't care, but it's my blog, so ppppthhhht! Ken lived across the street from me during our last year of college (but curiously, we were 24 and 25. Oh, how I love BYU). He and his room mate spent many evenings, and when I say evenings I really mean late at night, in my living room talking to my room mates, Laura and Cheryl (hi guys!). I would emerge from my basement lair, tell them to pipe down and then retreat for my beauty sleep and morning classes. Ken would hang out then go home, watch a movie, go jogging at 3 am and then sleep until noon. Somewhere in there I assume he also studied a bit but maybe not. He probably just showed up and dazzled his professors with his ...

A few projects

I made this pair of puppies from this really cute crochet book: They were my first attempts at animals and they showed me just how hard it is to crochet evenly and then attach all the limbs correctly. Dylan and Caitlin accepted these two little guys and love them in spite of their lopsidedness. But I decided to try again: Following the same pattern I made these two little puppies. There are still many things about attaching limbs that I need to master. Once the puppies were stuffed their eyes never looked quite like they were supposed to and the noses were obviously stitched on off center. But I learned to pin the limbs into place with straight pins before sewing that that helped me out immensely. Here's the other project from the same book that I have been working on:

some things about me

Is it cheating if I reuse material from another place? Once in college I used a paper I had written for one class for an assignment in another class. I told the professor and he acted like he was giving me a free pass by accepting it. Whatever! I wrote it! Is it my fault that it fit the assignments for two different classes? Anyway, I hardly ever do these but I spent a really long time compiling this list for a facebook meme so I am reprinting it with permission from the author (me) here: 25 things about me. 1. I like the weather to stay between 67-73 degrees. Preferably with sunshine. I also love thunder storms on summer evenings in Utah. They smell amazingly fresh and rainy. I like to watch them from inside. 2. I have enough embarrassing moments to fill this list but one of the most embarrassing was once in college when I thought my car was dead. I called a room mate to come pick me up, she called her brother to come look at the car and tow it. He drove 45 minutes to rescu...
