A week later- FAQ

Since you all are dying to know- alright since my sister in law Julie asked- here are the answers to some of the questions you might have for me regarding my new face.

1. So why exactly are you paying thousands of dollars to have your face broken?

You may or may not have noticed that I previously had a rather substantial over bite. (I also have a prominent chin button- or so the orthodontist told me- and that compensated for my slack jawed chin.) I had it evaluated when I was young but due to incompetent doctors and living in foreign countries where dental work is still in the middle ages, my parents wisely opted not to let Frau Doktor Koenigs-Bottem or what ever her name was- pull all my teeth and make me wear head gear. However, not being able to bite properly was a drag so I waited until we had really really terrible health insurance and then made Ken pay for it all out of pocket.

2. What did they do to you?

After putting me under, the doctor cut through my bottom jaw at an angle on both sides and slid the lower jaw forward until it was in the correct place. He then inserted small screws through my cheeks to secure the jaw in place. When I came to in the hospital my braces were rubber banded together, my face looked like I'd been badly beaten in a war and both nostrils were all bloody. My nurse was nice enough to lie and tell me I looked pretty good. She also said I didn't look old enough to have two kids. I love her. But I wasn't fooled by either comment.

3. Do the screws come out?

No. They are there for good. I had heard something about new dissolvable screws, but I got the regular old metal kind.

4. Didn't Ken also have some similar surgery?

Yes. He did. Heaven help our children!

5. How long will it take for you to recover?

The doctor told me about 2 weeks. Some people have told me acquaintances of theirs have take longer- up to a few months to recover completely. I appear to be a quick healer. My face doesn't look distorted anymore. I just look a little plump in the face. There's some kind of strange yellow bruising all down the front of my neck, my lower jaw is still very numb, my tongue is numb, I can't open my mouth very far, but I am feeling pretty good. I still feel a little off balance from time to time, but I think that my down time is pretty much over. I am back to eating real food. Very soft food in very small bites, but real food!

6. Will you look different?

Yes, slightly different. We won't know until the swelling goes all the way down exactly what the new face will be. One worry I mentioned before was not wanting to look like Jay Leno. It appears I will not look like Leno. My lower lip is going to be more pouty and my upper lip is looking a little puny at the moment. Hopefully it will all balance out.

7. Are you done with braces now?

The braces stayed on for the surgery and they stay on for a bit longer. My teeth were arranged the best they could prior to surgery but there is still moving of teeth in my future. I won't go back to my orthodontist for a while- the surgeon wants to make sure everything is well healed before letting them yank the teeth around again. But once I am clear to go back to the orthodontist, I think I will only have a few months of braces left. I am really hoping I'll be done by Christmas or New Years.

So there you are. Questions you never really asked yourself and answers that may or may not interest you.

Holy frijoles! I had one ortho tell me I needed jaw surgery, and then braces, and head gear, and possibly a chin implant to balance my non perfect, imbalanced face. Fortunately, enough was corrected by the braces--I'm perfectly happy. Jaw surgery sounds excrutiating, but the first time you can bite something in half with your front teeth, all will be worth it. Funny side note: one guy in my ward listed all of the corrective surgeries suggested by doctors to change this or that on his face, and said "I didn't do any of it, except the braces. I didn't want my kids asking, 'Dad, why do you look like Tom Cruise, and we look like THIS?'"

Well, I for one, wanted to know all that. Thanks for taking the time to answer all the FAQ's (or at least, Frequently thought about questions, but afraid to ask!) Glad you are feeling better and are able to eat a few things.

The pouty lip sounds like a fabulous fringe benefit! Hello, Angelina Jolie! ;)

I am glad to hear that you are healing quickly.

We love you!

I am so happy you posted all those answers, I didn't know enough to ask the question, but honestly, I am reading your blogs from newest to oldest right now, and the one with only the pictures before and after had me guessing why you would ever want a nose job? I am a little behind...happy for your quick recovery, happy it had a real purpose, and happy you get to enjoy eating again!

10 years today

Dylan made me these hearts as an anniversary gift. Sweet, huh? Ten years ago I was newly graduated from college, in love and ready to get married! Well, technically I was freaking out about getting married, which probably made Ken feel super good. Most of you know this story and the rest of you probably don't care, but it's my blog, so ppppthhhht! Ken lived across the street from me during our last year of college (but curiously, we were 24 and 25. Oh, how I love BYU). He and his room mate spent many evenings, and when I say evenings I really mean late at night, in my living room talking to my room mates, Laura and Cheryl (hi guys!). I would emerge from my basement lair, tell them to pipe down and then retreat for my beauty sleep and morning classes. Ken would hang out then go home, watch a movie, go jogging at 3 am and then sleep until noon. Somewhere in there I assume he also studied a bit but maybe not. He probably just showed up and dazzled his professors with his ...

A few projects

I made this pair of puppies from this really cute crochet book: They were my first attempts at animals and they showed me just how hard it is to crochet evenly and then attach all the limbs correctly. Dylan and Caitlin accepted these two little guys and love them in spite of their lopsidedness. But I decided to try again: Following the same pattern I made these two little puppies. There are still many things about attaching limbs that I need to master. Once the puppies were stuffed their eyes never looked quite like they were supposed to and the noses were obviously stitched on off center. But I learned to pin the limbs into place with straight pins before sewing that that helped me out immensely. Here's the other project from the same book that I have been working on:

some things about me

Is it cheating if I reuse material from another place? Once in college I used a paper I had written for one class for an assignment in another class. I told the professor and he acted like he was giving me a free pass by accepting it. Whatever! I wrote it! Is it my fault that it fit the assignments for two different classes? Anyway, I hardly ever do these but I spent a really long time compiling this list for a facebook meme so I am reprinting it with permission from the author (me) here: 25 things about me. 1. I like the weather to stay between 67-73 degrees. Preferably with sunshine. I also love thunder storms on summer evenings in Utah. They smell amazingly fresh and rainy. I like to watch them from inside. 2. I have enough embarrassing moments to fill this list but one of the most embarrassing was once in college when I thought my car was dead. I called a room mate to come pick me up, she called her brother to come look at the car and tow it. He drove 45 minutes to rescu...
