Today is The Day

In a few short hours I will make my way to the hospital and pay lots of money to have my jaw broken. Ken keeps offering to break it himself and I have considered starting a bar room brawl, but somehow I think this is best left to the professionals. So here's more information than you probably want, but the surgery consists of my lower jaw being cut at an angle on both sides, my jaw being pulled forward to the desired position and then screws being inserted through my cheeks to hold the jaw in its new place. The jaw bone will then heal in its new spot and voila- I can take bites of food! Well, in several months I will be closer to being able to take bites of food. The braces stay on for a while longer. But possibly as early as December I will unveil the new smile!

So someone mentioned to me that if my new teeth aren't properly documented and I am killed in some fiery death that my old dental records will not help in identifying the remains. Charming conversation, I know, but something to think about! Luckily my orthodontist wants me to come in for new X-rays as soon as I can drag my bloated face in there. Here's what he said:
"You should come in for X-ray 2-3 days after the surgery."
Me- "Really?"
Him- "yeah, you know-just whenever you're feeling up to it- 2 or three days or- well yeah. 2 or 3 days."
So apparently I will be feeling up for it in 2 or 3 days.

I am amazed by all of the kind offers of help I have received. I am sure that I will be just fine convalescing here at home but I know that Dylan and Caitlin will need some extra attention. We've been assured by everyone from close family and friends to neighbors we just met that everyone wants to help out with the kids. That's really nice!

So depending on how grotesque the swelling turns out to be you may or may not see any post op pictures but I will absolutely post pictures of my new jaw once I am all healed. Unless I come out looking like Jay Leno. Nothing against Jay, he's a super nice guy. He gave Ken a watch. But I'm going for a more subtle look.

Mindy,
Best of luck!! If I were there, I would offer to come sit with you or help with the kids but since I can't, I'll just keep you in my thoughts and prayers. My dentist told me a while back that I needed to have my jaw fixed but I never did it. Interested to see how you recover.

Good luck! I hope the recovery goes well and that you have a lot of opportunity to rest up. Take everyone up on all those kind offers to help.Is there any way I can have milkshakes shipped to your house in lieu of bringing a meal?

I'm sure everything will go well. And yes, your face will be swollen. Mine looked like a pumpkin. My swelling went away pretty quickly, and I am hoping that your's does too! I wish I had called you! You won't be talking for awhile now. Remember, no matter how hungry you get, don't try to blend up a hamburger or macaroni and cheese. It just won't work. Stick to the ensure.

Good luck. I'll be thinking about you.

10 years today

Dylan made me these hearts as an anniversary gift. Sweet, huh? Ten years ago I was newly graduated from college, in love and ready to get married! Well, technically I was freaking out about getting married, which probably made Ken feel super good. Most of you know this story and the rest of you probably don't care, but it's my blog, so ppppthhhht! Ken lived across the street from me during our last year of college (but curiously, we were 24 and 25. Oh, how I love BYU). He and his room mate spent many evenings, and when I say evenings I really mean late at night, in my living room talking to my room mates, Laura and Cheryl (hi guys!). I would emerge from my basement lair, tell them to pipe down and then retreat for my beauty sleep and morning classes. Ken would hang out then go home, watch a movie, go jogging at 3 am and then sleep until noon. Somewhere in there I assume he also studied a bit but maybe not. He probably just showed up and dazzled his professors with his ...

A few projects

I made this pair of puppies from this really cute crochet book: They were my first attempts at animals and they showed me just how hard it is to crochet evenly and then attach all the limbs correctly. Dylan and Caitlin accepted these two little guys and love them in spite of their lopsidedness. But I decided to try again: Following the same pattern I made these two little puppies. There are still many things about attaching limbs that I need to master. Once the puppies were stuffed their eyes never looked quite like they were supposed to and the noses were obviously stitched on off center. But I learned to pin the limbs into place with straight pins before sewing that that helped me out immensely. Here's the other project from the same book that I have been working on:

some things about me

Is it cheating if I reuse material from another place? Once in college I used a paper I had written for one class for an assignment in another class. I told the professor and he acted like he was giving me a free pass by accepting it. Whatever! I wrote it! Is it my fault that it fit the assignments for two different classes? Anyway, I hardly ever do these but I spent a really long time compiling this list for a facebook meme so I am reprinting it with permission from the author (me) here: 25 things about me. 1. I like the weather to stay between 67-73 degrees. Preferably with sunshine. I also love thunder storms on summer evenings in Utah. They smell amazingly fresh and rainy. I like to watch them from inside. 2. I have enough embarrassing moments to fill this list but one of the most embarrassing was once in college when I thought my car was dead. I called a room mate to come pick me up, she called her brother to come look at the car and tow it. He drove 45 minutes to rescu...
