Blog Reboot

Can it be a blog reboot if really it's going to be just like it was before only I try to post more often? I should give it a new look, only I don't really know how. That can be my first blog goal for 2014. Figure out how to get a new look for the blog. Goal #2: Don't let this blog post languish all alone. Nothing is sadder than all those entries in my journals that start "Wow! It sure has been a long time since I wrote in my journal! But I'm going to write in here all the time from now on!" At least those entries are hidden inside a book inside a side table drawer next to my bed. This poor little entry will be sitting here on the blog with no other 2014 posts to keep it company.

I can't realistically fill in all that I missed by not posting much last year. Here's the lowdown on the winter holidays: We got a new puppy! His name is Chance. He's a poodle/cavalier mix.
After Banjo died in November we thought we might wait a while to get a new dog and we also planned on getting a dog that was around a year old. I found myself looking for a dog with an obsessive fever beyond my control. I was checking classifieds and craigslist multiple times a day, telling myself I was just getting a feel for what was out there. Dylan and Caitlin were agitating for a new dog right away. Ken and I talked about the possibility of surprising the kids Christmas morning with a dog gift wrapped. We quickly dismissed the idea, recognizing how nearly impossible it would be to find the right dog at the right time, get someone to keep it at their house leading up to Christmas, and have a box for the kids to open with a dog waiting quietly inside.

When I saw the listing for this puppy I knew I would have to find a way to make it all work. I contacted the owner, decided the price was too high, the distance to pick him up was too far, felt bummed and decided that it really was best to wait a while for a new dog. Caitlin got really sick and then I got really sock shortly after her. I actually stopped looking online at dogs for a few days. I assumed this puppy was long sold and put him out of my mind. At least 2 weeks passed and I saw him listed again and with the price lowered. I took it as a sign that I was meant to have this particular dog. I arranged with the owner to pick him up 30 minutes away instead of 6 hours round trip away. I tricked my good friend into keeping Chance for 4 days, I bought a big box and poked holes in the bottom. We kept him in a kennel in our basement Christmas Eve and somehow the kids didn't hear any noises. Christmas morning I put him into the box, took him to the kids and they opened him right up. He sat quietly in the box until it was opened. The kids were so happy!

He's such a cute little guy. He's not too naughty but he's sure a mischievous little thing on occasion. We're working hard on house training and not biting. He's ridiculously cute chasing a toy around. He leaps like a little goat. Welcome to the family Chance! If you promise to quit peeing on my floors I promise to protect you from the over eager affection from my children. Do we have a deal?

I had a fish named chance once… I figured it would last a week, maybe a month (which is why I named him chance… I figured I was taking one on even trying to keep him alive). Nope… he lasted several years. Your chance is far cuter and more playful. We'll have to come meet him.

Glad I'm not the only one with the same journal first line entry every time.
Such a cutie! Cannot believe you pulled off the puppy surprise...that never happens right! I am SO glad you are blogging again!

10 years today

Dylan made me these hearts as an anniversary gift. Sweet, huh? Ten years ago I was newly graduated from college, in love and ready to get married! Well, technically I was freaking out about getting married, which probably made Ken feel super good. Most of you know this story and the rest of you probably don't care, but it's my blog, so ppppthhhht! Ken lived across the street from me during our last year of college (but curiously, we were 24 and 25. Oh, how I love BYU). He and his room mate spent many evenings, and when I say evenings I really mean late at night, in my living room talking to my room mates, Laura and Cheryl (hi guys!). I would emerge from my basement lair, tell them to pipe down and then retreat for my beauty sleep and morning classes. Ken would hang out then go home, watch a movie, go jogging at 3 am and then sleep until noon. Somewhere in there I assume he also studied a bit but maybe not. He probably just showed up and dazzled his professors with his ...

A few projects

I made this pair of puppies from this really cute crochet book: They were my first attempts at animals and they showed me just how hard it is to crochet evenly and then attach all the limbs correctly. Dylan and Caitlin accepted these two little guys and love them in spite of their lopsidedness. But I decided to try again: Following the same pattern I made these two little puppies. There are still many things about attaching limbs that I need to master. Once the puppies were stuffed their eyes never looked quite like they were supposed to and the noses were obviously stitched on off center. But I learned to pin the limbs into place with straight pins before sewing that that helped me out immensely. Here's the other project from the same book that I have been working on:

some things about me

Is it cheating if I reuse material from another place? Once in college I used a paper I had written for one class for an assignment in another class. I told the professor and he acted like he was giving me a free pass by accepting it. Whatever! I wrote it! Is it my fault that it fit the assignments for two different classes? Anyway, I hardly ever do these but I spent a really long time compiling this list for a facebook meme so I am reprinting it with permission from the author (me) here: 25 things about me. 1. I like the weather to stay between 67-73 degrees. Preferably with sunshine. I also love thunder storms on summer evenings in Utah. They smell amazingly fresh and rainy. I like to watch them from inside. 2. I have enough embarrassing moments to fill this list but one of the most embarrassing was once in college when I thought my car was dead. I called a room mate to come pick me up, she called her brother to come look at the car and tow it. He drove 45 minutes to rescu...
