The flight from Seattle to Iceland is about 8 hours. Then there was a layover of an hour followed by a 3 hour flight Iceland to Stockholm. We left in the early afternoon and so the kids weren't ready to sleep on the first flight. That made the layover around 10 pm their time. The excitement was enough to keep them energetic. I was sure there would be a little sleep on the next flight. Dylan might have dozed- I was sitting behind him so I didn't see. Caitlin, however, slept not a wink. Instead she made a new best friend. She was seated on the opposite side of the isle from me with another mom and 5 year old boy. The little boy and Caitlin watched cartoons, played games and (when the mania set in) jumped up and down on their chairs.
The only way to ever get over jetlag is to GO GO GO! So we marched the kids around Stockholm. At one point they were so sad and tired that we knew it was time for desperate action. We stopped in a candy store and let them loose.
We took them for some lunch and marched them around some more until they really were at the breaking point. We were in a park, at the top of a hill and they were crying and laying down on the ground. Just as we were about to take them back to the hotel we stumbled across a playground. Somehow the kids managed to rustle up some energy and played on the playground for at least another hour.

And thus we tricked our kids into staying up for around 30 hours straight. They slept in a bit the next day. (Well, actually they were up by 7:00 a.m. But we were expecting them to be wide awake at 3 a.m. so we were happy with 7!)
Many of you may have seen this video on my facebook page but I am re-posting it here because it cracks me up.
